Networking and Learning at Karla*hof

On 16 June, we visited Karla*hof for networking, exchange, and learning. The visit was an opportunity to connect our initiatives and explore how community projects can strengthen solidarity, self-determination, and sustainable ways of living.

We introduced the work of Women in Exile & Friends and shared why we wanted to build a connection with Karla*hof. As a self-organised initiative of refugee women*, we advocate for the rights of refugee and migrant women* who continue to face isolation, racism, discrimination, and barriers to participation in society. Our work is rooted in the belief that refugee women* must be recognised not as passive recipients of support, but as individuals with skills, professions, talents, and the right to live with dignity and equal opportunities.

Karla*hof shared insights into their community house project and farm, where sustainable agriculture, collective organising, and community life come together. We had the opportunity to learn about crop rotation, companion planting, and the different needs of plants in terms of water, sunlight, and soil. It was inspiring to exchange knowledge and hear about the collective ways they organise their work.

One highlight was learning that every Monday is an open farm day, when anyone is welcome to join the gardening activities, ask questions, and learn by doing. The day ends with a shared lunch prepared from fresh produce grown on the farm – a wonderful example of community, cooperation, and care. We were grateful to experience this warm hospitality ourselves.

Before we left, Karla*hof generously donated vegetable seedlings, seeds, fresh spinach, lettuce and honey for ourselves and our community garden in Markgrafpieske. These contributions will support our garden as a place where refugee and migrant women* can meet, grow food together, exchange knowledge, and build community.

We are thankful to the Karla*hof team for their openness, generosity, and inspiring work. We look forward to continuing this exchange and strengthening our collaboration in the future.
