Lately, the dangerous situation for homosexuals in Uganda has been very present in the media, due to the new anti-gay bill signed by President Museveni. As a reaction, the World Bank and western countries such as the US and the Netherlands have announced to freeze their financial aid to the state of Uganda. This reinforces the broad idea in Ugandan society, that LGBTI rights are a damaging export product of western imperialism. Meanwhile the German state keeps rejecting the big majority of refugees that apply for asylum because of persecution based on sexual orientation.
What are the new grades of persecution within this law and what is the context and history of it? What has been the situation until now for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersexual people, on a legal level and on the level of society? And how has it been before the British colonization?
These and other questions we would like to discuss with three refugees from Uganda, together with an activist of the „International Women Space“ (IWS).

Anlässlich der Unterzeichnung des neuen Anti-Homosexuellen-Gesetz durch Präsident Museveni ist die gefährliche Situation von Homosexuellen in Uganda in der letzten Zeit verstärkt in den medialen Fokus gerückt. Als Reaktion darauf wurde seitens der Weltbank sowie westlichen Staaten wie den USA und Niederlanden angekündigt, finanzielle Hilfsleistungen an den ugandischen Staat auszusetzen. Dies wiederum bestärkt die vorherrschende Auffassung in der ugandischen Gesellschaft, die Rechte von LGBTI Menschen sei ein schädliches Exportprodukt des westlichen Imperialismus. Währenddessen wird in Deutschland weiterhin die große Mehrheit an Geflüchteten, die wegen der Verfolgung aufgrund ihrer sexuellen Orientierung Asyl beantragen, abgelehnt.
Worin besteht die neue Qualität der Verfolgung durch dieses Gesetz, was ist der Kontext und die Vorgeschichte? Wie war die Situation bisher für Lesben, Schwule, Bisexuelle, Transmenschen und Intersexuelle in Uganda, sowohl auf der rechtlichen als auch auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene? Und wie war das vor der Britischen Kolonisierung?
Diese und weitere Fragen möchten wir diskutieren mit drei Flüchtlingen aus Uganda, sowie mit einer Aktivistin aus dem „International Women Space“.
